Our local market town, sweet Mirepoix, is one of the most delightful ancient medieval towns in France. It is where we go to shop, eat, or just to relax in the restaurants, cafes, and bars. There is an excellent Monday morning market. During the summer there are events and festivals of some sort almost every week. It’s a gentle 15 minute drive from Le Puget on unhurried roads.
There is a different feel to the scenery and an impressive range of accessible sites and activities in every direction. South of us are the Pyrenees, with dramatic peaks, caves, rivers, skiing, and tremendous walking. To the east is Carcassonne, perhaps the finest medieval citadel in Europe with its chain of Cathar castles – Montsegur can be seen from our land. They are a real insight into the troubled times of the Cathar Crusades 8 centuries ago. Beyond Carcassonne are the wide beaches of the Med and the gorgeous sites of the Corbieres, Minervois, and Roussillon. To the west is the elegant city of Toulouse. North, cross the Canal du Midi to find the Montaigne Noire and small cities like Castres, which has an important collection of Goyas, or Revel, said by some to have the best food market in the world.
We can arrange cycling, kayaking, horse riding, fishing, massages, fitness assessments – or just loan you a map for a delightful local walk.
For quieter days, a local artist does classes, and French lessons are possible too.
